Looking after a website after launch
Launch day is the start, not the finish. A short guide to keeping a site healthy.
It's tempting to think of a website as finished the day it goes live. In practice, a site is more like a shopfront: it needs a little regular attention to stay safe, current and welcoming.
The essentials
- Keep the software it runs on up to date, so known security problems are fixed
- Make sure backups are happening, and check now and then that they can be restored
- Review your key pages every few months: are prices, team members and services still right?
- Watch how fast your pages load, especially on phones
Small improvements add up
The best sites improve steadily. Look at the questions customers ask you most and answer them on the site. Notice where people drop off and make that step simpler. A handful of thoughtful changes each year will often do more than a full redesign every five.
If you'd rather not think about any of this, that's what ongoing care is for. Either way, a little attention goes a long way.
